A little bit about us

We began this class in October 2001 Ann McIvor & Karen Westwell were instrumental in starting up this class & asked the help of myself & Raz Whitehead to teach the class, as we both attended a class at Skipton for approx 2 years.

We started the class for a 10 week course only & the ladies who attended wanted to carry on with the classes, so here we are over 2 years later.

We were awarded a grant in November 2002 from the Pendle Community Network, we use this grant to attend hafla's (a group gathering of Belly Dancers) to purchase costumes & to organize Workshops where we invite Arabic dance teachers to Trawden to learn us new dances & moves, the latest dance being "The Feather Boa Dance" a saucy little number using a feather boa !!

We would all like to thank the late Harry Greenwood & Danella Cordingly for their support in the start up of this class & in it's continuation.

Arabic dance

Arabic dance - sometimes known as Raqs Sharqi, Oriental Dance or Belly Dance is a dance form which gives expression to female strength & sensuality, sharp hip movements contrast with fluid circular movements.

Traditionally learned within the family & performed at weddings & other social gatherings. In the west it has become popular as an exercise & dance form which is accessible to women of all ages, shapes & sizes.
Our members range from 70 years young to 10 years old!
