Snooker Handicap Final
The annual snooker handicap final came to a conclusion
on Sunday night 15th of February.
From a starting field of 24 it came down to the two finalists, Andrew Stevenson
of Skipton Road and Steve Smart of Lane House.
Going into the final, with a start of 5 points, Steve held the highest break
of the tournament so far of 33. After a good start by Steve he took the first
frame despite a brave effort and pressure from Andrew.
The second frame unfolded with a new high break of 41 from Andrew, which brought
great applause from the capacity crowd, to restore his confidence and even
the tie 1-1.
The third and final deciding frame promised to be a real cracker and both players
didn't disappoint pulling out all the stops, Andrew with clever safety play
and Steve his precision potting, the match drew towards it's conclusion. Andrew,
with a lead of 23 points and all the colours worth 27 points left, looked destined
for glory until a missed yellow opened the door for Steve. It was a big ask
but Steve held his nerve well and cleared the table to become Cockhill snooker
champion 2004.
It was one of the best handicap finals for some years and the evening was rounded
off by the presentation of the Geoff Brown trophy followed by complimentary
stew and onion butties for all.
Some photos of the match can be seen below.
